The Top 5 Digital Marketing Podcasts for Your Morning Commute
October 31, 2016 •Sonja Gray

I have recently become a “podcast evangelist.” I’m sorry if that sound ridiculous coming from a marketer, but, up until a few months ago, listening to podcasts seemed difficult to fit into my already crammed schedule. Difficult, that is, until I really learned how to take advantage of my podcast app (Castbox - love!) queue.
Now, on a daily basis, I get notifications about recently published episodes for my podcast subscriptions. When downloaded, they get added to my queue so that I canlisten to them on my lengthy commute. If one just lasts for a fraction of mycommute, it automatically starts up the next podcast in my queue, so that I don’thave to fumble with it while driving!
So, in honor of my podcast evangelization, here are some of the fantastic podcastsI’m listening to in order to keep my digital marketing skills sharp:
1. ‘Social Media Marketing,’ by Michael Stelzner
This podcast covers everything social media. Each episode, Michael has a discussion with a guest from one of the dominant social media channels: Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Twitter or Pinterest. All the tricks and tips discussed are sure to keep you on your game when it comes to social media. Plus, Michael is super easy to listen to — what a nice guy!

2. HubSpot’s ‘The Growth Show’
If you haven’t checked out content from HubSpot, you definitely should. They have awesome inbound marketing blog posts, eBooks and now a podcast deconstructing how spotlight guests have achieved remarkable growth, whether it be a company, a movement, an idea or a team.

3. ‘The Science of Social Media’ by Buffer
This one discusses ways to implement social media marketing across a variety of platforms and industries. Buffer (a social media publishing and analytics tool) hosts, but the podcast features guests from across the industry and I don’t feel it is biased. They interview some of the best marketers from brands and businesses that are leading the way in social media innovation and experimentation around the world. I find it super interesting.

4. ‘Social Pros Podcast’ by Convince & Convert
This is one of the most popular marketing podcasts in the world. It even won “Best Podcast/Audio Series” at the 2015 Content Marketing Awards. You get the inside stories and behind-the-scenes secrets about how companies like Ford, Dell, IBM, ESPN and others staff, operate and measure their social media programs. I’ve also gotten some great info on influencer marketing from their “sister” podcast, Influencer Pros, as well.

5. ‘How to be Awesome at Your Job’ with Pete Mockaitis
Okay, I know this podcast isn’t specifically marketing related, but who doesn’t want to be awesome at their job? This show has really fantastic guests that cover a wide range of topics, from sleep and efficiency to sharpening memory and developing your intuition. Pete interviews thought-leaders and results-deliverers to discover specific, actionable insights that boost work performance.

According to the Pew Research Center, as of 2016, 21% of Americans ages 12 or older say they have listened to a podcast in the past month. This reflects a steady incremental growth since 2013 – when this share was 12%. I definitely see the appeal and am a converted radio listener. Listening to podcasts has turned my commute from a chore into enjoyable time and overall, makes the trip seem much shorter.
Turn your commute into self-development time! There are podcasts on huge variety of topics, including these wonderful ones related to digital marketing.

Sonja Gray is an Account Manager for Mojo Media Labs. The evolution of digital marketing has completely changed the buyer’s journey. I started my career in Yellow Page advertising where the buyer had a thought about a product or service, made a call and the sales staff picked up the journey at the education phase. That all happens now before the phone call is ever made. I have developed a real passion for Inbound Marketing and am excited to help my clients direct their buyer’s journeys online and feel that my 15+ years of experience in SEM (both PPC & SEO), Social Media, Websites, Print Advertising, Account and Project Management is a huge value. When I’m not planning campaigns, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two teenage boys, walking my dog, Dexter, reading and cooking!
