SEO has changed a lot over the years. Many marketers these days aren’t sure what’s outdated, what’s important, what will actually move the needle and what’s simply wasted effort. Part of that is due to several SEO myths out there. Fortunately, we’ve been debunking several of them with a series of blog posts. This one will cover Myth #14: microsites and other domains that link or redirect back to my site will help my SEO. Once we’ve debunked that, we’ll show you how we embrace reality.
(For the first 10 myths, be sure to download our e-guide, “Debunked: 10 SEO Myths to Avoid in 2016.”)
Myth: Microsites and Other Domains That Link or Redirect Back To My Site Will Help My SEO
Reality: Microsites and Other Domains That Link or Redirect Back To My Site Won’t Help My SEO
The chances of this doing much for your SEO are slim to none. It’s like having an election in which you vote for yourself a thousand times — that still counts as one vote.
Search engines are smart enough to know who the registrants are for a domain and can see if it’s the same person as your primary domain. (Note: If you are reading this and thinking, “Well, then I’ll just change my registration information,” you are clearly thinking like a spammer. Don’t be that person!)
There is not much value in spreading your SEO thin, which is what you do by setting up domain after domain and optimizing each rather than putting all of that love into your primary domain. Why not just add the content to your primary domain or build a tool as an add-on to your website?
How Mojo Embraces Reality
We’re fully aware of this myth at Mojo, which is why we focus more on creating quality content instead of building links with a microsite or other domain. Sure, microsites have their unique purpose in the world of marketing, but they’re not a sound strategy for the long run. By having the big picture in mind, we’re able to better build SEO for ourselves (and our clients) than “get rich quick” SEO schemes.
Microsites and other domains that link or redirect back to your site won’t help your SEO — so consider this myth debunked. Be sure to stay tuned to our blog for the next myth we tackle, Myth #15: Google will never know if I have bad sites linking to me.
